These pictures show the rod being used to indicate the path of the club when using an iron. When using an iron the ball should be hit with a decending blow compressing the ball between the club and the ground.
The opposite is true when hitting a driver, the ball is struck on the upswing as the rod indicates. This exercise can help the player to visualize the required position.
One of the most helpful exercises to obtain a good body rotation is to place two rods in the ground on either side of the player´s feet (as shown).
Put your hands across your chest and make a full shoulder turn without touching the rod to your right, maintaining your weight on the inside of your right foot.
Transfer your weight and rotate onto the left side.
When finishing the rotation through the ball, your weight should be on the outside of your left foot.
This is a good exercise that helps to understand the correct use of the hands. Hold a rod in your right hand and place your left hand on your right arm above the elbow. Then make a swing back and through.
If done correctly, you should hear a "swishing" sound throught the hitting area. In order to achieve this the right hand must be rotated through the impact position.
